Homeowners Fire Up Furnaces

Posted: Updated:

With colder weather in Minot that means people are firing up their furnaces for the first time this season.  Just like any other appliance you have, your furnace needs a tune up.

The temperature says 27 degrees, but kids are still outside playing at recess.  Many are bundled up in their favorite hats and mittens as they run around the playground.  Eventually, they'll be coming back inside to warm up.

"This is the time of year that start up is very busy and then, there will be a lull.  You know, everyone is running it and they're doing well.  When it really gets cold and the equipment has to work hard and then there will be another spike in it," says Kevin Martin, Ralph's Plumbing and Heating Owner.

With high temperatures expected to be in the 30's and 40's this week, people will be turning on their heat.  But, for some, they don't keep up on routine maintenance during the year.

"It's preventative maintenance like your car.  You get your oil changed, you know, to get that many miles, you get it done.  And, a furnace is kind of the same way.  You want to To get more life out of the furnace, it's a good idea to replace the filter every month," says Martin.

"If people understood their systems better, I think that the system would work better and probably last longer," explains Martin.  "A lot of these furnaces are failed because of lack of maintenance."

Martin says nearly 20 percent of the company's service calls are from the lack of homeowners changing filters.  And, by not changing filters, Martin says you can actually damage your furnace.  As the cold weather continues, furnace repairs will continue to heat up.

"When we get those cold snaps for 7-14 days, its subzero, it has to be taken care of," says Martin.  "You can't live without it.  When you need the heat, the house needs to be above freezing."

Martin and the rest of his staff at Ralph's Plumbing and Heating say they're ready for Mother Nature.

Once your furnace is 10-12 years old, Martin says it's a good idea to have it checked by a professional every year or two to make sure everything is running correctly.
