Bill Focuses on Native American Families

Posted: Updated:

Senator Heidi Heitkamp has introduced her first bill since joining the U.S Senate.

The bill would set up a commission to discuss issues facing native american children, such as poverty, substance abuse, child abuse and suicide.

The senator has asked that the commission be named after Alyce Spotted Bear, a former tribal chairwoman of the Three Affiliated Tribes, who passed away in August.

"She was not only a powerful political leader but also a spiritual leader and really a grandmother and very significant elder who cared significantly for children. And I know that with that name this commission can't fail because she'll be up there pulling for us," says Heitkamp.

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, a Republican, worked on the bill with Heitkamp.
