High School Students Getting Dual Credits

Posted: Updated:

Bismarck public schools, Mandan, Beulah, and Linton students are taking Medical Terminology for dual credit. Rasmussen's online course allows students to work independently on assignments and in the classroom for lab work and tests.

For 5 years the Career Academy and some high schools have worked together to offer students more class options.Medical Terminology is a new online course this year, allowing students to work independently on their assignments.

"This course is kind of a really nice transition, I think, between a high school and college course," says Joelean Lowman. "Because you still have the support, that high school teacher, but it is structured a little more independently. Where students really have to learn to manage their time well, use good study skills."

More than 70 students across North Dakota are taking the new course. At each high school, a facilitator is available administer tests and help with lab work, but no one is reminding the students to do their work.

"Quite frankly this scenario where I think students are pretty motivated that they want to take the class. they know what's at the end for them when they finish. That was our only concern. And quite frankly that's not a concern at this point." says Dale Hoeauf.

Students say they have mixed emotions on the nature of the course, but over all say they like it.

" I kinda wanted the experience of an online class, as to just sitting in class." says Kylie Kudrna. "And I don't think I just though it would be cool...maybe like the one-on-one like learning experience. But I also like teaching myself, because I think it's easier that way."

Another benefit to the online class is that students can reach out and immediately get help from other students in the different cities.
