Don't Buy It Until We Try It: Wax Vac

Posted: Updated:

Over time, your ears can become clogged with wax, which can cause headaches and other health problems.  Well, there may be a safe and easy way to clean your ears without using a q-tip.  In this week's "Don't Buy It, Until We Try It," I tried out the Wax Vac.

There's a common myth that q-tips are the best way to clean your ears.  But, if you ask any hearing professional, they'll tell you there's no truth behind that.

"Q-tips actually work more as a plunger effect to push wax deeper into the canal.  Certainly when you pull the swab out, you'll see wax on the tip.  But, you're actually pushing some of it deeper into the canal," said Dr. Ed Malazdrewicz, Professional Hearing Service Audiologist.

And, everyone's ears are different.

Dr Malazdrewicz said, "We do see it quite a bit.  I mean, some of the elderly people have a little bit more wax.  As you age, some conditions of the skin and of the canal shape of the ear canal can change."

To hopefully make removing wax a little easier, we decided to put the Wax Vac to the test.  It sells for around $10 and promises to gently and effectively clean your ears.

"I don't have high expectations," said Dr Malazdrewicz.

After we loaded the batteries, it was time to turn it on.  But, something wasn't right.

"It does seem like a pretty sturdy little thing," said Dr. Andrea Larson, Professional Hearing Service Audiologist.  "I'm going to turn on the light, possibly batteries [are] not in correctly."

Well, let's just say we were forced to glance over the instructions and re-load the batteries correctly.

The Wax Vac comes with 8 silicone tips in a variety of colors all close in size.  Put the silicon tip on the nozzle and it's ready to use.

Whoops, I forgot one other thing.  Make sure you put the safety ear guard on for extra support.

Finally, it was time to use.

"It just feels like a little bit of air flow and it sounds like a hairdryer."

Once we were done cleaning one ear, we found out just how successful we were or should I say how unsuccessful we were.

"It looks clean and dry so far," said Dr. Larson.

We even changed the silicone tip hoping for better results, but still no luck.

Dr. Larson said, "I can see why people would want something easy to use at home, but if you can't see what you're doing and if it did have more suction, it would be dangerous.  So, I don't think it does much of anything."

One of the cool features of the Wax Vac is it does have a built in light on it.  The problem is you still can't see what you're doing.  This product did nothing but blow cool air into your ear.  Not exactly what they advertised on TV.

So, this week's "Don't Buy It, Until We Try It," earns a thumbs down.
