More Mineral Owners Join Gas Lawsuit

Posted: Updated:

Lawsuits have been filed against several oil companies operating in the Bakken, and the numbers of mineral owners could increase.

Dozens of mineral owners in North Dakota have expressed interest in joining the lawsuits filed last month. Those suits are seeking damages for natural gas that is lost when burned rather than being captured and sold. The mineral owners are represented by a legal team of lawyers from around the country and one firm is in Bismarck.

"There are 10 suits against 10 different operators right now and people with interest in well operated by them, it could have an impact on and as people are coming to us there may be other suits just depending on the claims people have and if they're calling us to pursue those claims," says Derrick Braaten, Baumstark Braaten Law.

Braaten says the case is still in the administrative process, and that the legal team has granted extensions to the oil well operators. There is no set court date.
