Documentary Filmmakers Come to Leith

Posted: Updated:

Leith residents are used to news cameras in town. However, for the past week, they've seen a different kind of video crew.

Two documentary filmmakers from New York City are in town to make a film about the recent events. Nonetheless, they aren't looking to glamorize what has become a national story.

"The focus of the documentary is to kind of bring the town of Leith into perspective," said Christopher Walker, a producer, director, and editor for the documentary. "And hopefully not just because of what's going on with the newcomers."

Walker and his filmmaking partner Michael Nichols started following the story in August after they read an article in the New York Times.

"It's like, is this really happening?" Michael Nichols, video shooter, producer and director said. "It seems so outlandish that there was a white supremacist attempted takeover of this tiny North Dakota town."

However, the pair did not decide to head to Leith until another family of white supremacists moved into Cobb's home.

"[We want] to just tell the story of a small town, give both sides equal opportunities and we'll see how this all unfolds," Walker said.

They've talked to about eleven people on both sides of the issue. Leith residents say they're hoping this will help people understand what they're going through.

"[I'm hoping] I guess that our story gets out there and people realize how much our lives have had to change in the last three months because of what Cobb has been doing," said Ryan Schock, Leith Mayor.

Nichols and Walker say this project has been a great experience so far. They are planning to produce a 15 to 30 minute film.

"We're incredibly grateful," Nichols said. "Everyone has been so eager to share their stories with us, and that's all we can ask for as documentary filmmakers."

Craig Cobb has been away on the East Coast the entire time the filmmakers have been here, so they're coming back in December to interview him. After that, they say it will take between 4 and 6 months to finish the film.
