Learning About Winter Driving

Posted: Updated:

Driving in the summer is a completely different concept than driving in the heart of winter. Today, the DOT put on a presentation to educate and remind locals of safe techniques for winter driving.

While Jim Acid of the National Weather Service predicts normal temperatures and precipitation for Williston this winter, he recommends having your car prepared as you never know when a winter storm will strike.

"The first thing is winterize your vehicle. This includes checking tire pressure, topping off your anti freeze, check your belts and hoses for wear, checking your oil levels and updating your survival kit" explained Acid.

Sergeant Darcy Aberle of the Highway Patrol reminds drivers to take no travel advisories extremely seriously. Conditions can vary and can change rapidly. Aberle also had suggestions on how to share the road with snow plows.

"If you come upon a plow on the roadway give them room. They are just there to clean the roads.  They don't need the extra hassle of drivers coming up besides them or close to them. Plows are a lot wider than the truck and people aren't realizing that and we've had issues where people have struck the plow" said Aberle.

Plows will be everywhere as the DOT has added to their collection and will debut a new type of plow that is extremely efficient.

"We also have added more snow plows to our fleet to better our snow fighting ability. One of them includes the tow plow which can clear more areas of road by dragging a secondary blow behind it to clear 24 feet instead of just the 12 that is normally used" added Katie Pizza of the NDDOT.

Aberle recommends giving yourself between 15 minutes and an hour of extra time when driving in the snow.
