Minot Awareness

Posted: Updated:

You may be surprised to hear that Anorexia is the number one cause of death when it comes to mental disorders.  Eating disorders like Anorexia and Bulimia are actually mental illnesses that can take years to overcome.

To help educate people about the disorders, Minot State University student, Kelsey Wagner, held an awareness walk yesterday at the MSU Dome.  Wagner has been battling anorexia herself for about seven years and wants other to understand the affects and causes of the disorders and others like it.

"An eating disorder is not glamorous by any means," says Wagner. "To be skinny is not to be idolized, it is obsessive thoughts that go through your head.  All you can think about is food an calories and you beat yourself up constantly.  It's not something that I would wish upon my worst enemy.  It's an awful, awful feeling, but to create support really helps."

Donations from today's event will go to the Sanford Fargo Eating Disorder Institute.  Wagner said that with the Magic City steadily growing, Minot will need resources of its own to help people fight these disorders.
