As the temperature drops closer to zero, more activities are moved inside. But there is a way to enjoy the outdoors and still stay warm this winter. To try and get more people to travel through rural Morton County, the Bismarck/Mandan Development Agency went to the Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway Committee last year. What they came up with was a pretty unique trail.
Take a trip down old highway ten, and you might not realize you're passing through some historically and culturally important places.
"Travelers are coming through, or even their own community members, they can learn about the history in their area," says Terri Theil, Dickinson Visitors Bureau.
That's why last year, the Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway Committee worked with communities along the highway to set up a Talking Trail.
"Talking trails are unique in our area," says Theil.
The trail has points all the way from Dickinson to Fort Lincoln in Mandan.
"We ended up doing scripts for each community. They all got to pick out where they would like to have their sign, what they would like to highlight in their city besides their city history. So it varies between four to five signs per community," says Theil.
The trail is simple. At each stop, there's a sign with a phone number. Every sign has its own extension. Dial that extension and you'll get to hear a one to two minute info session about what you're seeing. And when you dial that number, tourism groups in the area can get some information on where visitors like to go.
"We have some analytics that go with it so we can tell where people are using these different phone numbers and how often people are staying and stopping at these different spots," says Theil.
But there's one stop on the trail that's gotten a little more attention than the others.
"The most popular point right now is New Salem Sue," says Theil.
But committee members say the whole trip has something to offer visitors and the communities.
"This has been a really positive move to bring something forward for rural communities saying we can work together as community members, we can work together as counties together, too," says Theil.
