Health Department Investigates Hepatitis C Outbreak

Posted: Updated:

The State Health Department says eight more people have tested positive for Hepatitis C in the Minot area, which brings the total to 35. Hepatitis C is spread by the blood to blood contact with an infected person. It's not the kind that is spread by sharing eating utensils, hugging, kissing, holding hands, coughing, or sneezing, and it is not spread through food or water. So far, about 500 people have been tested, and experts haven't identified the source of the outbreak.

"There's been other outbreaks of Hepatitis C across the country, and some of the things that they have identified has been certain caregivers, certain drug diversions and we've looked at those paths and we kind of moved past those and looked at another venue," says state epidemiologist Tracy Miller.

Anyone with questions should call the Public Health Hotline at 866-207-2880 or go to ndhealth.gov.
