Winter Survival Kits

Posted: Updated:

With the winter season fast approaching, it never hurts to think about preparing for bad weather.  From heavy snowfall to below-zero temperatures, being prepared can save your life.

The National Weather services recommends that people have readiness kits in their cars and homes this winter.  Winter storms can cause power outages which can leave homeowners out of supplies, heat and power, and strand drivers on the roadside, just like the blizzard that hit North Dakota in 2011, where more than 800 drivers were stranded in their cars.  Having kits with water, food, a first aid kit, and warm clothing and blankets can help you make it through the night.

"It really does take people, especially people from the South by surprise because they've never dealt with it.  And I know they've hear horror stories about how bad it gets here, and it does get very cold.  But as long as you're prepared for it, you're okay.  Hopefully they aren't living in campers, motor homes, things like that

because those are extremely hard to heat, and you're setting yourself up for some real issues," stated Gail Slinde, an NDSU Ward County Extension Agent.

You can register to win a Red Cross survival kit at www.readydakota.org
