Farm Bill Progress

Posted: Updated:

With a December 13th deadline looming for a House-Senate agreement on a new nationwide Farm Bill, North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp is urging farmers and ranchers to keep pressure on lawmakers to come to an agreement.

Heitkamp spoke to a crowd of hundreds at the 87th annual Farmer's Union State Convention today about the progress and setbacks of the Bill.  While this Bill focuses on crop insurance as the main risk mitigation tool, there are disagreements between commodity titles and country of origin labeling.  Heitkamp knows one thing for certain, farmers and ranchers need a Farm Bill passed as soon as possible.  "The average farmer in North Dakota, the inputs are almost over one million dollars.  Think about that, a million dollars at risk.  They're betting on the weather, they're betting on the prices, they're betting on the winter and how soon Spring will come and how late Fall will go, and weather they're going to have enough moisture, or not enough.  There's a lot of risk in farming," stated Heitkamp.

Failure to meet the December 13th deadline means the Farm Bill would be kicked into a third year of debate.  North Dakota Senator John Hoeven will be at the Farmer's Union Convention tomorrow to again speak about the progress of the Bill.
