Special Olympics Recognizes Bismarck Woman

Posted: Updated:

Each year the Special Olympics North Dakota names one man and woman Athlete of the Year. Just a few weeks ago, Mandan's very own Jan Moser won the title.

Watching her work, you can tell Jan Moser is dedicated and friendly. But you'd never guess she plays six different sports in the Special Olympic Games.

"As an athlete, I think, she's a, she's definitely a team person. And she enjoys competition," says her friend, Andrew Schweitzer.

In 2003, Moser moved to Mandan from South Dakota and began playing in the Special Olympics. At first, she only participated in a couple events, but over the years her interest grew to volleyball, bowling, soccer and more.

Moser received a gold and bronze medal for volleyball. Friends know her upbeat personality and sportsmanship is what got her the nomination and title of Athlete of the Year.

"I sat at the table and her parents were there. And she took the honor very calmly, you know. I was more excited for her than I think she was. But she knows it's a big deal," says Special Olympics coordinator Barb Braun.

As athlete of the year, Moser will have to make special appearances and attend state tournaments to lead competitors in the Special Olympic oath.

"She's very excited about it, and it's something that she takes great pride in, and is really appreciative to have. I don't think it's going to change her. In the fact that she just is, she is very humble and caring," says supervisor Jackie Lausch.

With her new title, Moser says she wants to inspire others.

"I would like them to participate more in sports and be like me, and get medals and be Athlete of the Year, like me," says Moser.

On top of playing sports year round and working at Pride Incorporated, Moser volunteers at the Central Dakota Human Society and dedicates as much time as she can to her family.

This summer, Moser is participating in the 2014 U-S Games in New Jersey and hopes to bring home the gold in bowling.
