Black Friday is almost over, but that doesn't mean the savings stop, at least at some local businesses. Small Business Saturday takes place the Saturday after Black Friday, and it aims at supporting local and independently-owned businesses.
Most shoppers think Black Friday is the day to save, but the nationwide Small Business Saturday is growing in popularity, especially right here in Bismarck.
"People really like the product offering that small businesses have but its hard to pass up a really good deal when the big stores are doing that so it kind of gives us the opportunity to save some money on the things they want as well," says store manager Michelle Kauffman, Hey Ocean.
Joanne McLeod traveled five hours from Canada to get some Black Friday shopping in, and she says next year she'll plan to stay until Small Business Saturday.
"Actually, we wanted to come down and see what some of these shops were like. And we're really happy with the shopping down here, and we would probably pass it on to other people back home," says McLeod.
The Bismarck Downtowners Association says the number of local businesses participating in Small Business Saturday nearly doubled from last year, increasing from 17 to more than 30 stores.
"I don't know why a small business wouldn't participate, I mean it's just a really fun community atmosphere, that we all get together and decide what specials we are going to run and help bring people to a lot of new stores," says Kauffman.
And even though many people were out shopping for Black Friday, some plan to support Small Business Saturday.
"We probably will because one of my friends they own a store down here so I'll probably check that out," says shopper Alexa Hutzenbiler.
The Bismarck businesses participating in Small Business Saturday don't only pertain to boutique clothing stores. Art galleries, restaurants and even Dakota Stage offer discounts.
"I think that's the main point, when you shop locally the money stays in the community," says owner Lynn Prouty, Impact Gallery.
Business owners say because more retailers are participating this year, they expect it to be the most successful Small Business Saturday yet.
