Firefighters Battle Flames in Minot

Posted: Updated:

A large fire destroys the Chateau Apartments under construction on 2nd Avenue southwest in Minot.

Fire crews have been on the scene since 6:30 this morning trying to fight the flames which made the morning commute challenging.

The apartment complex was being rebuilt after being damaged by a fire only years ago.

"The main part of the fire was kind of centrally located here, and, it burned that way. Which we had a west wind which burnt into the wind, says Battalion Fire Chief, John Hocking.

Flames were almost as high as the flag poles.

"A lot of bran came off of this and we had to get down wind. And, in some cases, they thought there were some roofs on fire. And, I don't think that turned out to be so, but I haven't got the final report on the either. But, that's another challenge when you have something this big going. The additional fires you can have from bran that's coming off of this thing," says Hocking.

Minot Police Department blocked off portions of 16th Street through 2nd Avenue Southwest and 18th Street. That way crews could have multiple hoses running at a time, ensuring safety to the public. But, this is a dangerous job for the crews on scene.

"There comes a point where can't be close to that building because of a collapse zone. And, we got to get back and start rotating. We started rotating men in and out of here," says Hocking.

As crews are fighting the fire. They're also fighting the cold weather.

"Weather is always difficult. The ice we got to work on is slippery. It's dangerous and certainly cold weather isn't climate weather for fire fighting," says Hocking.

With these sub zero temperatures we're experiencing, responders have to be extra cautious when shutting down the hoses. If not, hoses will freeze up which could potentially delay putting out the fire.

Even with these harsh temperatures, crews were working around the clock to battle the flames.

Fire crews have contained the fire. But, there is not much left The Chateau Apartments that were being built.

There is still no word on the cause of the fire right now.  The fire still remains under investigation. We'll have new information for you as it becomes available.
