Groups Recognize North Dakota's Funding of Cessation Programs

Posted: Updated:

A coalition of anti-tobacco groups ranked North Dakota number one in funding programs to prevent children from smoking and to help smokers quit.

The annual report says the state spends nine and a half million dollars a year on prevention and cessation programs, and is one of the only two states that meet the funding level recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And it appears to be working.

In two years, the percentage of North Dakota teens who use tobacco has dropped from 22 point 4 percent to 19  point 4 percent.

However, that is still above the national average of 18.1 percent.
