Locals See a Property Tax Decline

Posted: Updated:

The year is coming to an end and that means people will soon be receiving their property tax statements, if they haven't already.

Last session lawmakers passed nearly $860 million in property tax relief and now residents are finally starting to see the reduction.

Most homeowners don't look forward to getting their property tax statement in the mail. But this year some say it's not so bad.

"I was pretty excited because our taxes went down $940 from last year," says realtor Alrene Volk.

That's about a 19 percent reduction in her property taxes. Which is exactly what residents in the Bismarck area should be seeing.

"A couple of tax payers have noted that since 2008 the total legislative relief package is amounting to just under forty percent. So it's nineteen percent reduction from last year and just about a 40 percent reduction from 2008," says Kevin Glatt.

Volk, who works as a real estate agent in Bismarck says that's good news for people who are looking to purchase a home.

"Anytime you see tax relief it's going to help the industry I think,"says Volk.

But some homeowners say while their property taxes went down other parts of the bill went up.

"We're not seeing any increase in the taxes, There may be some special assessments that are on their bill," says Glatt. "Also note that values have increased and that's just part of supply and demand."

The reductions are a first step but some say more could still be done to provide additional relief to homeowners and the issue will likely come up again during the next legislative session.
