Target Confirms Massive Credit Card Attack

Posted: Updated:

Target confirms today that its stores have been hit by a major credit card attack involving up to 40 million customers nation-wide.

The holiday season is the busiest time of year for retail outlets like Target.

But, the Minneapolis based company reports approximately 40 million credit and debit card accounts may be been impacted between November 27 through December 15 in its U.S. Stores.

In a statement released by Target Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer Gregg Steinhafel says, "Target's first priority is preserving the trust of our guests, and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence.  We regret any inconvenience this may cause.  We take this matter very seriously, and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice."

Target contacted authorities and financial institutions immediately after it was made aware of the unauthorized access.

The company is partnering with a leading third-party forensics firm to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.

Many financial institutions say they have identified affected accounts involved in the incident, and are working to change account numbers to limit damage. If shopped at Target November 27 through December 15, you are encouraged to contact your financial institution immediately to change account numbers.

If you suspect you are a victim of unauthorized activity, you are asked to call Target at: 1-866-852-8680.
