Church Restored After Flood

Posted: Updated:

For nearly 2.5 years now, Christ Lutheran Church in Minot has been working around the clock to restore and revitalize its building after the 2011 flood destroyed nearly everything.

And, thanks to all of the members of their congregation and volunteers in the community, the church is feeling more at home.

After the flood waters destroyed the basement and flooded the main level of Christ Lutheran Church, the congregation has been forced to adapt and make do with the existing conditions in order to hold Christmas services at the church.

"Christmas is such a wonderful time and we capture it in the biblical word of Emmanuel, God with us," says David Maxfield, Christ Lutheran Church Senior Pastor.  "And, that's been the story of our congregation over the last 2.5 years ever since the flood.  The whole neighborhood, the school, everybody received water, and we did too.  We've been walking together, very slowly, very faithfully."

During this summer, volunteers installed new pews in the sanctuary, as well as restored stain glass windows and helped with carpentry and wood work.  Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who have devoted thousands of hours of labor, the church is starting to feel more like home.

Maxfield says, "Last year, we had chairs.  This year, we have seats, we have lighting and it's just a beautiful time to celebrate the birth of Jesus."

The sidewalks have been plowed, the doors have been unlocked, and the congregation at Christ Lutheran Church is ready to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

"It's been a Christmas story in itself of people coming together just like in the original story.  We've had business people, we've had neighbors, we've had people from all over the country who have come to lend a hand to be a part of our rebuild of our rebirth if you would and so, it makes Christmas even that much more special if you realize that it is very real," says Maxfield.

While the memories of the flood are fresh on the minds of many, as the congregation celebrates this Christmas, they have a lot to be thankful for.

Maxfield says, "My hope is that people would not only take a look at the wonder of how far we have come and perhaps, think about how far we have to go, but to appreciate it right here, right now, the wonder of it all."

Next spring, Christ Lutheran Church hopes to begin work on a new fellowship hall, kitchen, and community area.

Christ Lutheran Church has three Christmas Eve services.  There will also be a Christmas Day service at 10 am.
