A nonprofit organization is giving two Bismarck women a fresh start in the New Year. And it all begins with a new set of keys.
A Bismarck nonprofit agency is helping community members help each other. The mission of Creative Connections and Opportunities is to promote self-sufficiency. And thanks to several businesses and residents, they gave away two cars earlier today.
"We've had some great success already. When I have approached business owners in the community, I've heard nothing but yes from them. And I expected nothing less of Bismarck and Mandan," says Sarah Carlson, CCO.
In total, six cars have been donated to the program. And all of them came from community members. Donated cars are given to people who need them to find or keep a job. Carlson says it's a hand-up, not a hand-out.
For one woman, it's about regaining her independence. And for another, it's an opportunity to keep working.
"It's really nice to be able to have a vehicle again. I haven't had one in three and a half months, and I have my independence back again. I don't have to depend on other people and my mom for rides, and I don't have to wait for my mom after work and stuff," says Rose Hegel.
"This just makes a world of difference for me, to be able to continue working and advancing. And I can't tell you how thankful I am to all of the dealerships who are participating in this and the program itself. It's such a great program to have the our community," says Paula Floer.
Dvorak Motors housed and repaired the vehicles, some of which were donated through the company's Pay It Forward event.
Creative Connections and Opportunities is looking for volunteers to teach classes, help with events, and repair and clean cars.
