Precautions Help People Stay Safe on New Year's Eve

Posted: Updated:

Many people bring in the new year with family and friends, and sometimes the celebrations include alcohol. Alcoholic beverages can either help or hinder the night depending upon the amount you drink.

Celebrating the holidays should be a time for fun and responsibility.

"Even though it, tis the season to be merry, that doesn't mean you can go out and rink and drive. No, we're not trying to really ruin anybody's fun," say Mark Buschena, Bismarck police department.

Although it's the holidays, you should always have a plan and be aware of your surroundings.

Doctors say don't drink too much, especially if you're mixing with energy drinks, which can cause irregular an heart beat. Know how you're getting home and have a back-up plan in case something changes.

If you're planning on having an evening with the family, keep an eye out.

"Making sure to watch the little ones, that they're not reaching or gonna tip anything over. That's a big thing as well," says Physcian Jessica Carlson. "If you're cooking, no fires and watch stoves making sure that you shut the oven off at night before bed."

"We're just planning on hanging out and spending time together at home and stuff. Having supper there and stuff like that. It's more fun than going out with all the people," says Karleen Weigel.

"I will be working as a CNA. Hoping all my residents, I guess, behave and are having a good time in their room. I'll just be walking around not doing much," says Alli Greff.

This New Years Eve, police and doctors says go ahead and have fun any way you can, just do so, in moderation.

Whatever you do, don't drink and drive. If you see a drunk driver, safely pull to the side of the road and call police.
