Supreme Court Determines Mineral Rights

Posted: Updated:

Over 150 million dollars of oil royalties will be moved into a state fund after dozens of individuals have lost in the case of mineral rights ownership against the state of North Dakota.

The state supreme court has ruled that the state owns mineral rights up to the ordinary high water mark on both sides of navigable rivers. In this case dozens of Williston and Williams County residents sought rights from drilling oil along the Missouri river.

The oil revenues that were earned throughout the year were kept in special funds. And now that a decision has been made, the money will go to the strategic investment and improvements fund.

Our energy reporter Mary Cate Mannion has more tonight.
