Lincoln School Opens for Learning

Posted: Updated:

Of all the students who went back to school today, a small portion of them were very excited.
That's because they moved into a brand new building.

Everything isn't completely finished, there are some last minute items that need to be squared away, but that didn't dull the excitement. Students, faculty, staff, city and school board leaders, the construction team and neighbors came together to celebrate this exciting first day.

The opening of a school in Lincoln has been a long time coming.

"Langston Hughes has a poem called a dream deferred. And I think Lincoln Elementary is a dream deferred. It's been 40 years in the making," says Superintendent Tamara Uselman.

Hundreds of students have been waiting eagerly for months to go to school without leaving town, and now it's finally happening. Their first day back is in their new school.

"You know we've been together as students for this whole school year. And we've never had the opportunity together as a whole team," says Principal Shelly Swanson. "And so for us to come together this year as a team. That is one of our major goals, but also to bridge, kinda, some gaps with our community."

The community has been more than willing to help out.

"Some of the teachers are able to purchase cameras or Kindles, things like that, through the work of the businesses in Lincoln and the clubs of Lincoln," says PTO member Karalee Harper.

"So, it's a fantastic day. It's just a day to really celebrate tons of hard work from all kinds of people. Those who came before the school board , this school board, and all of them in the community over the years," says Uselman.

The fourth graders are the oldest ones this year, and they're looking forward to their new role at the top of the heap.

"I was excited for the brand new school. Because we're the oldest kids in the school, and it feels like we're leaders to the younger kids,"says Peyton Harding.

"Help people out. Like kindergarteners and first graders," says Tayley Bruer.

Next year, there will be fifth graders in  Lincoln as well, and more than 400 students will be enrolled. The school was built to hold up to 488.

Lincoln Elementary is in the midst of  an open house that started at 3 p.m. and ended at 6 p.m. for parents and anyone else to come see the brand new school.
