Shoppers Prepare for a Cold Weekend

Posted: Updated:

The entire state is preparing for the coldest and harshest weather of the new year, and perhaps for a few years.

Roads and sidewalks were slippery today, but that didn't stop people from heading out to stock up on necessities before the temperature drops.

Grocery store lines stretched back into the aisles as shoppers prepared for this weekend's cold weather.

"It's been cold in North Dakota already from parts of December, but the thing that really makes this a little bit different is the fact that we're going to have stronger winds associated with it," says Corey King, National Weather Service.

Those winds will bring temps to 50 or 60 below.

"Under these types of conditions, it only takes about five minutes to reach frostbite," says King.

And even though the parking lot is full here at Cash Wise Foods, that doesn't mean people are worried about the frigid winter weather this weekend.

"We're out of hot cocoa, so I'm here to buy some homemade hot cocoa mix I can make. But otherwise, the weather's really not going to bother me," says Brian Hefer.

"If you dress warm, you can always take layers off. But no, it doesn't bother me at all," says Kathy Ibach.

"I grew up in the north all my life, so you just get used to it and you make provisions," says Hefer.

And many across the state say they have more important things to worry about tomorrow.

"Probably hunker down at home, watch some TV and tomorrow watch the Bison play and cheer them on," says Ibach.

The National Weather Service says if you do need to go outside tomorrow, make sure you have all your skin covered.

King says there is a blizzard warning going into effect tonight and the reduced visibility combined with life-threatening cold means you might just want to stay inside.
