Drivers Spent Less on Gas in 2013

Posted: Updated:

It's a given that if you drive, you have to buy gas.

"You just get used to it. I got to go. I live in New Salem, I got to go," says driver Carie Avalon.

But fortunately for drivers, it was actually cheaper to buy regular unleaded in 2013 than in three years.

"It surprised me, because I fill up twice a week at least. But, you know it hasn't been crazy. I mean, we've has it close to $4 before, so this is actually very nice to see that it's closer to $3," says Avalon.

The average price at the pump last year in the state was $3.54 a gallon, down from an average of $3.61 in 2012.

"What we're seeing is higher oil production in the United States lead by the Bakken oil fields. Were also seeing increased refining capacity, and those two factors should allow for more stable prices throughout the year," says Gene LaDoucer, Triple A.

Prices were over $4 a gallon last May, which drove up the annual average. But it's expected to be cheaper this year.

"Well, right now, were possibly seeing peak prices around the $3.60 to $3.80 a gallon level with the annual average probably a little bit less than what we saw this year," says LaDoucer.

Overall gas prices have been lowest in Cass County, and drivers in Burleigh and Morton counties have been paying the most at the pump.

North Dakota prices are still above the national average. Last year, drivers in the state paid about five cents more per gallon compared to the rest of the country.
