Self Defense Center Gives Back

Posted: Updated:

A local self-defense center is starting 2014 off by doing what it can to give back to the community.

North Dakota Krav Maga in Mandan had their first Saturday Series this weekend. The series is held the first Saturday of every month this year, and offers self-defense classes kids and women at a discounted price. Each month, they offer a free class for those who serve the community, like law enforcement, military, teachers and medical staff. And owners say it's a way to give back to the area.

"With the changes in North Dakota, our population growing a lot of transient communities coming in for work, the good and the bad comes with that. And the bad part of it is the increase in crime. We want to make sure people are prepared on how to defend themselves realistically," says chief instructor Tomas Reis.

Reis says Krav Maga is a great way to get fit as well as learn how to protect yourself.

"It's from Israel. It means contact combat, and it was developed for the Israeli military. It's to teach them very quickly, to show how to be confident and effective in combat hand to hand situations. So, unlike traditional martial arts this is more personal defense," says Reis.
