Hot Tea Gives Health Benefits

Posted: Updated:

January is national hot tea month. Of course, drinking tea is a great way to keep warm during these frigid months, but the hot beverage may have more benefits than you might think.

It's the second oldest beverage on the planet after water. And drinking tea is also a great way to keep your body healthy.

The levels of tea start at white and move down to black, which is the heaviest tea.

"So white is your highest antioxidants, highest catechins, which help fight cancer, and the least amount of caffeine. All the way down to the black teas," says Steep Me owner, Terisina Hintz.

And because dark teas are fermented, they're loaded with probiotics.

"Probiotics resume your metabolism. It gets you ready to go in the morning. It's not a caffeination, but it makes you feel good; it keeps your body healthy," says Hintz.

Now, of course as North Dakotans, we drink tea to stay warm, but once cold and flu season rolls around, it's a good idea to drink it for the health benefits.

"They say if you drink three cups of black tea a day, you actually build up your immunity five times stronger than people that don't drink tea," says Hintz.

And what about all the coffee drinkers out there? Doctors say caffeine can have negative effects on people who have heart conditions, like high blood pressure or heart arrhythmia.

"If they are drinking a lot of coffee with caffeine, then either decaffeinated coffee or going to tea that had less caffeine," says Sanford Dietitian Nicole Enzminger.

So during this month, brew yourself a healthier lifestyle one cup of tea at a time.

Tea is also a zero calorie drink; however, doctors say, it's important to watch what kinds of things are added to it, like milk or sugar because that can increase calories.
