Firefighters Attend Training

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters from across the state are in Bismarck today, and it's not for an emergency. The firefighters are all leaders of their departments, and they are each taking part in a conference to help them learn new tips for when they are on the job.

Carol Holman has been in the fire service for 19 years, the last two serving with the Minot Rural Fire Department. And she says a lot has changed since she first got started.

"A lot more technology, a lot more knowledge being sent our way from the sciences. You know learning different techniques, and ways that we may have done things in the past are not as affective as we thought," says Carol Holman, Minot Rural Fire Department.

Which is why she and other leaders in the fire industry are taking time this weekend to learn new skills.

"When you're in command, you tend to have blinders and you're kind of focusing on it and a situational awareness issue comes into affect. You need to have a broad view of the situation," says state training director Rob Knuth.

The conference also gives the leaders an opportunity to learn what does and doesn't work well in other departments.

"I enjoy the networking and just hearing what's going on around the state. Hearing what other people are trying and what's successful in their organizations and maybe we can apply some of those to ours," says Fargo Fire Chief Steve Dirksen.

And just like almost every other industry, social media is also starting to play a bigger role in the day to day operations for fire officials.

"Nationally there is a big issue. Facebook, Twitter, even just digital pictures are becoming an issue for firefighters and the public," says Knuth.

They will hear about the legal issues surrounding social media from a practicing lawyer who once worked as a deputy fire chief.

The conference will continue this weekend and conclude on Sunday.
