Epi Pens in Bismarck Schools

Posted: Updated:
As of January first, a new federal law took effect that's urging schools to better protect children who suffer from severe food allergies. since 1997, the number of kids with food allergies has gone up 50-percent - and a growing number of children are having their first allergic reaction at school. However, the schools here in Bismarck have stayed ahead of the trend. they've had epi pens in our local schools for more than a year.

"We got the administrative rule, or the handbook done," says school nurse, Evy Monzelowsky. "Put those out online and then were able to get epi pens for all school buildings that are not prescribed to any individual. But they're considered stock epi pens because they're there incase someone would have a severe allergic reaction."

Doctors say, as of right now, approximately two to six percent of all children have some form of food allergy.
