Hooves Hit the Hardwood

Posted: Updated:

Donkey Basketball, players ride donkey's while still trying to play some hoops. This is the fourth time the Kidder County Family, Career and Community Leaders of America hosted the competition as a fundraiser.

"I think seeing our families in our community come together we get people from all over and their main thinks is spending time together as a family and it's cheap entertainment and it's for a good cause," says FCCLA chapter advisor, Antoinette Heier.

Four teams of local riders played in the tournament, and the donkey's were provided by Dairyland Donkey Basketball out of Wisconsin. And rider's say they didn't know what to expect.

"I don't think you can practice, I mean a couple of us have been bucked off  horses before so I mean I think that's as close as you can get," says participant, Cassidy Ziesch.

And as players found out, half the battle was getting their partner to move. But that doesn't mean the game comes without risks,  all of the players were required to sign safety waivers and wear helmets. And Heier says it could get a little dangerous.

"Usually if you're in sports we don't recommend, two years ago I actually tore my meniscus stepping off wrong, nothing to do with the donkeys," says Heier.

Heier estimated that 300 spectators attended the event, and Zeisch said she thinks it's the type of entertainment that can please everyone.

"It's not just a 50/50 raffle it's something different that they don't do every year and it really draws out a different crowd you know maybe people don't like sporting events but maybe they hear donkey basketball and they think that's something different," says Ziesch.

The proceeds raised from the game will go towards sending the FCCLA to local, state, and national competitions.
