More Men Move to North Dakota for Work

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota had the biggest population increase of any state last year. But as the state grows, there's a bit of a difference between the number of men and women moving here.

Now hiring signs seem to be everywhere in North Dakota. And most of those jobs are appealing more to one gender than the other.

"The data indicates now there's about 7,000 or 8,000 more males than females at least as of midpoint of 2012," says Kevin Inverson, North Dakota Census.

In Bismarck alone, over a 1,000 more men moved to the city than women between 2010 and 2012.

"We're certainly seeing those industries that are very heavily male-dominated grow exponentially and they're becoming actually more male than they were before," says Iverson.

Experts say that the discrepancy comes from the fact that the jobs available in North Dakota are more popular with men than women.

"Mining, construction, transportation, material moving, they've all had some incredible employment growth," says Michael Ziesch, Job Service.

That popularity is helping businesses in those industries expand.

"Along with all the growth, it's definitely been growth for us as well  and so we have been looking out of state to fill some of the needed jobs," says Eric Brenden, Northwest Contracting.

But those census numbers only reflect people living in the state, which means there could be an even bigger difference.

"If you look at the number of individuals who are working here, keeping a residence out of state, it appears to be even more male-dominated," says Iverson.

Most of the people moving into the state are between the ages of 19 and 34. And the census office says it's because they are more willing to move to where the work is.
