West River Community Center Construction on Track

Posted: Updated:

Construction is a constant in Dickinson right now. And one of the biggest projects underway is the West River Community Center.

The expansion has been a bit of an inconvenience for members. While all that construction will help members in the long run, it's a little bit of a pain right now.

The dust is settling at the West River Community Center. And the new expansion is starting to take shape.

"We're adding a total roughly of 35,000 square feet. Currently, they're done with the demolition part of the project. The two areas are connected to each other," says Matt Mack, Dickinson Parks and Recreation.

Those two areas are the old and new basketball courts. The old ones are becoming a new aerobics room and free weights area.

But the old gym is closed, and that's putting a strain on the community center members.

"During construction time, it is inconveniencing some, especially those who use the basketball courts. Those courts are used. I'm there 2 or 3 times a week and I know they get used a lot," says Shawn Kessel, Dickinson City Administrator.

"We're definitely going through some growing pains right now. But we're hoping that the finished product is going to be what everybody wants," says Mack.

The finished product should be done by late March or early April.

"Hopefully the long term gain is well worth the investment we're making and the short term pain," says Kessel.

And that long term gain will include a lot of new equipment.

"Basically it's going to relieve some pressure. Everybody's all kind of cramped into one area right now when they're working out, it's going to give people some space," says Mack.

Construction also includes a new ice rink and outdoor pool that builders will finish this year.

The ice rink is still on schedule, but Mack says the outdoor pool probably won't be done until July.
