Treat ADHD with a Holistic Approach

Posted: Updated:
Medication is probably the most popular form of treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but if you're not comfortable taking that approach, child therapists say adding exercise and a more natural diet could help with the symptoms.

"We try to steer them towards whole foods," says child therapist, Valerie Meyers. "So, not eating preservatives or GMO's, usually we see a reaction to that. Just eating more naturally."

Child therapists also say kids who have ADHD have a harder time digesting or absorbing vitamins and nutrients. Adding some movement and protein to a daily routine will help the neurotransmitters in the gut and brain function better, which will help with the ADHD symptoms.

"After school give them a handful of peanuts, or a hard boiled egg or a protein snack until you make it to supper. Because usually that after school transition is when parents complain the most," says Meyers.

And when dinner time rolls around, make sure there's some structure at the dining room table. By no means will it cure the condition, but it will help set boundaries for those kiddos who have a harder time focusing.

"No cell phones, no tablets no TV on. Be there and have conversation, have a positive conversation," says dietitian, Kendal Bjella.

Taking the holistic route may require a few lifestyle changes, but it may be the first step in controlling a condition that's been plaguing kids and their families for years.
