Dickinson Hosts State Singles Pool Tournament

Posted: Updated:

It's tournament season for pool players. And some are warming up for the State Single Tournament.

Competitors from across the state will meet in Dickinson this weekend.
And one person will walk away with $1,000.

It's a game many people play for fun. But for some, it's more than that. More than 300 pool players are signed up to compete in the State Singles tournament. And they're hoping not to leave empty handed.

"In our singles tournament, it's usually about one thousand dollars, give or take, depending on how many entries there are. It's about one thousand dollars for first place," says Kevin Weisbeck, Dakota Music.

Stacy Keller has been playing pool for 20 years. And he's looking forward to the competition at this year's tournament.

"It's a good time to get out of town. The competition is the best in the state. That's why you go there. And the thrill of trying to win it," says Stacy Keller, Bismarck.

For Tyler Perry, it's a family affair. Growing up, he had a pool table at his house. And he's hoping to pass his love of the sport onto his two boys.

"I have a table at my house. And my little boys are always shooting balls in and clapping every time I make a ball. It's a good family interaction,"says Tyler Perry, Bismarck.

The men have played together for the last eight years. And their team has taken first at state twice.

"The state tournaments are a good way to put yourself against the other players throughout the state, see where you got to work on your game. And also, if you do well in the state tournament, and you do become a state champion, that's one notch you can put on your belt," says Tyler Perry, Bismarck.

And they don't mind sharing their skill set with others.

And look at what they taught me how to do!

"It's just a fun thing to do. It's a good pastime. It's fun to get together with a group of guys and  there's nothing else to do in the winter," says Keller.

The brackets for this year's tournament have already been drawn. And Perry and Keller could end up playing each other. In the past, Perry has taken the match. But Keller's not intimidated.
He says this is his year to win.

Perry and Keller may be competing against each other this weekend. But they'll be playing together at the state teams tournament next month. The men will also be traveling to Las Vegas for the national tournament, where they'll compete  in the scotch doubles event.
