Man Gives Back with Free Haircuts

Posted: Updated:

You can take your chances with a cheap haircut, or you can spend a lot to make sure you get what you really want. But, what could you get from a free haircut? A lot of people would be skeptical.

The soup kitchen menu at Immanuel Baptist Church features food, a shave and a haircut.

Irvin Pelton Jr. moved here two months ago looking for work.

To pass the time in between jobs, he gives free haircuts.

"It's my privilege to serve. I've already been paid by my creator, so there's no charge for anyone who comes in here," says Pelton.

Minot isn't the only city he's done pro bono work in.

Pelton has been to 16 states including Louisiana.

"Katrina, I set up a barber shop on the side of the road, and did free haircuts for weeks down there," he said.

Even thought the haircuts are free, Pelton still has trouble getting people in the chair.

"It's really hard to get the first guy in the chair because they just don't know if I know what I'm doing. Once you get the first one the rest follow," he says.

Irving cuts kids and women's hair too. He loves talking to the people he serves.

"Personality is primary. He has good rapport with people, he's a good listening and he also does a good job cutting hair," says Pelton's customer, Lorrie Redding. "He has a good background to talk to customers that sit in his chair. He can have a conversation about anything."

Word of mouth brings most customers to Pelton's makeshift barber shop. He says paying it forward is worth more than the price of a haircut.

Pelton is opening his own shop next week, but he says he'll still give free cuts once a week at Immanuel Baptist Church.
