Senator and Safety Board Meet to Improve Rail Safety

Posted: Updated:

Train whistles and oil tanker cars are common sounds and sights in many North Dakota towns, but federal agencies are proposing ways to improve rail car safety.

The National Transportation Safety board, along with their Canadian counterpart, met with Senator Hoeven and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to discuss ways to improve rail safety earlier this month.

Some of the proposed changes could include expanded route planning for certain liquids, proper classification on items being moved by rail, and mitigation plans in the event of a derailment or spill.
