Farm Bill Compromise Reached

Posted: Updated:

A House and Senate conference committee agreed today on a new five-year Farm Bill.

The bi-partisan compromise eliminates or consolidates many agriculture subsidy programs.

The largest cut, 19 billion dollars, comes from farm subsidy programs, including the end of a direct-payment program for farmers.

The bill preserves food stamps, but cuts benefits by about nine billion dollars over a decade, largely by closing a loophole.

Senator John Hoeven says, "It focuses on the right priorities: strengthens crop insurance, finds assistance for our livestock producers, continues the sugar program, and saves more than 24 billion dollars."

Senator Heidi Heitkamp says she's confident that this Farm Bill strikes the right balance.

The House will likely vote on the legislation Wednesday.

It's not clear when the Senate will take up the measure.
