Hicks Convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter

Posted: Updated:

A Nevada man is sentenced to nine years in prison for stabbing a man on the Reservation.

Last July Waylon Hicks, 22, stabbed Jeremiah Sage while they were sitting in a car parked, at the New Town Marina, on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Hicks than slashed Sage's throat.

After fleeing on foot, Hicks called the police. When authorities arrived the vehicle was on fire and Sage was inside. An autopsy showed Sage died from the stab wound to the chest.

Hicks is sentenced to nine years in prison and three years of supervised release for voluntary manslaughter. He is also ordered to pay $7,043 in restitution and $100 to the Crime Victim's Fund.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs at the Fort Berthold Agency, the Three Affiliated Tribes Police Department, the Mountrail County Sheriff's Office and the North Dakota State Fire Marshal.
