Great Plains Synfuels Plants Expands

Posted: Updated:

The Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah will now use several of their current products to make two new ones.

The Synfuels plant already creates natural gas from coal, but will soon add Urea and Diesel emission fluid to the list. Urea is a commonly used fertilizer and will be made using elements that the plant already produces.

"The great thing about Urea is that you use anhyrdous ammonia and carbon dioxide to produce it which we already produce at the Synfuels Plant. So really, we're taking two existing coproducts and we are able to add a third to bring even more of a benefit to rural America," says Mary Miller, Basin Electric.

Miller says the project will include a storage facility to hold the urea, and a new rail loading facility.
The plant will produce more than 1,000 tons of urea daily.
