Minot Student Speaks Up About Common Core

Few students ask for a more challenging course load, but Minot High School senior did just that and then some.

Chloe Rickards wanted the Department of Public Instruction to understand that the old standards in North Dakota schools aren't enough, and students want to be challenged.

DPI research says only 24 percent of North Dakota graduates are ready for college or the workforce.

Rickards says that could be blamed on less challenging class work. Having recently transferred from an academically challenging high school in Alabama, she says she was frustrated.

"By the third day I kinda had to like go. Ok, stop. I don't know what's going on. How do we asses things? What's going on? I kind of made a plan of I'm going to try and do my best in this school,"she says.

As part of a school assignment, Rickards wrote to DPI supporting the National Common Core standards implementation into curriculums across the state.

The state superintendent says her letter was a wake-up call. She says it's time to challenge our students more, and invited Rickards to speak to the Interim Education Funding Committee to enforce the standards that are already in place.

 "I often get letters from students and it's a request for shorter school days or maybe a longer summer vacation. And I began reading Chloe's letter and in the first paragraph I knew that this, it was significantly different. I thought Chloe's got a story to tell. And we have students like that across North Dakota," says Baelser.

Baesler says some parents argue, why not just apply the standards to younger grades, instead of adding on more work to high schools students? But she says that would leave too many students at a disadvantage.

The committee admired Rickard's intellect and hunger for knowledge, saying they plan to make sure students are challenged across the board.

Rickards says even though she's graduating this year, her younger brother will keep her up to date on the progress of common core.
