Heitkamp Reacts to State of Union Speech

Posted: Updated:

In his fifth State of the Union address last night President Barack Obama said 2014 will be a year of action, even if he has to do tackle the issues himself.

President Obama defended his healthcare law during the speech saying the "American people aren't interested in re-fighting old battles, let's not have another 40-something votes to repeal a law that's already helping millions of Americans."

But Senator John Hoeven says the law is not the right kind of healthcare reform.

"That's healthcare reform that empowers people to pick their own healthcare providers and their own insurance, not a large government run approach. And that's what the republicans are saying over and over again. It's also a factor in terms of getting our economy going and get small businesses to the point where they have confidence to invest," says Hoeven.

Senator Heidi Heitkamp said she agreed with the president on issues dealing with the long term unemployment rate, improving education and raising the federal minimum wage.

"There's been a lot of talk here, about him acting outside of the constitution, and I think that's wrong. I think he should always act within the constitution. I think he knows those boundaries pretty well, hopefully, he'll understand that there's things he can't do and things that he can do. And if he can help veterans without waiting for a bill to pass, I say do it," says Heitkamp.

She said she was less impressed with his talk about energy.
