Petroleum Council Explains Anti Flaring Techniques

Posted: Updated:

Flares are a common site on well pads across the state, but a new task force says the industry can capture 85 percent of the gas being burned.

The North Dakota Petroleum Council's Anti Flaring Task says the industry can capture the gas being flared through several new programs. From installing gas capture systems, penalties for failing to reduce flaring, to policies regarding right of ways for new pipelines. And the task force says they know where to start implementing these plans.

"Two hundred and sixteen wells in November were resulting in 60 percent of the flaring. So, if we can target those 216 wells go after those first, get a plan. We can get those connected and get the pipe sized properly so they can stop flaring. We did both of those, it's a future look and taking care of existing flares," says Eric Dille, Government Relations for EOG Resources.

The Task force will continue talks throughout the year, and the Industrial Commission will review the task force's findings and could take action on some of the proposed plans at their next meeting.
