Olympics Boost Interest in Curling

Posted: Updated:

Not many people know how to curl.

"It's just a matter of trying to get more of your stones closer to the center of the rings than your opponents," says Curt Bradbury, member of Bismarck's Capital Curling Club. "It sounds like a simple concept, but there's a lot of strategy involved."

"It's like chess on ice, it's probably the best way to put it."

When the winter Olympics come around, curling sweeps the competition.

"It's really fun when you get to throw the rocks around a little bit and see who gets the most points to win," says Luke Pengilly, a 10-year-old curler.

Members of Bismarck's Capital Curling Club say they're expecting the Sochi games to be a big hit with people who want to try out the sport.

"Given that it is an Olympic year, we are going to expect some kind of a spike in our membership," Bradbury says. "Right now, we've got upwards of 250 people."

The Capital Curling Club is open to people of all ages and skill levels, and even beginners can rock by the end of their first day.

"It's a good way to meet people, great people curl," says Dave Shireley, who just started curling in November of last year. "It's just fun to do something in North Dakota in the depths of the winter."

All the people who help at the club are members who volunteer.

"If you catch curling in the Olympics, you should come down," Shireley says. "We're always looking for people, always willing to teach people how to curl."

Members say they're hoping to have more than three-hundred people in the club in the near future.
