Demand for Remote Car Starters Up

Posted: Updated:

Cold weather and cars never seem to be a good mixture, but one item may make your troubles melt away.

Remote car starters have been around for years. When the temperatures get lower, the demand for them gets higher.

"The calls increase incredibly. I had about 15 people call yesterday wanting appointments for auto starts. The colder the weather, the more we sell," says Ryan Chevrolet service advisor Matt Grubbs.

And, they may be a good idea for the long run.

Stephen White, a technician at Ryan Chevrolet, says it's good for longevity to have warm oil flowing through your engine.

The remotes can allow you to start your car from thousands of feet away, meaning you'll no longer have to leave your keys inside an unlocked vehicle.

There are some ways the remote key can help you protect yourself from winter car theft.

"In most cases there's no way to steal a car. Even if the doors are unlocked while its running, they are equip to shut off when you try to put it in gear and drive without the keys," says Minot Police Chief John Klug.

Remote keys aren't only good for winter. They can help cool down your car in those summer time temperatures, before you even get in.
