Montana Man Pleads Guilty to Gun Charge

Posted: Updated:

A 47-year-old appeared in court today on charges of possessing a firearm by a felon. Steven Scranage faces three years and 10 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

On May 1, McKenzie County police ran a search of Scranage's residence in Fairview, Mont. There was a warrant for his arrest for violating his probation related to a 2005 conviction of drug possession.

During the search, police found two handguns and approximately six ounces of marijuana in the residence. They also discovered five other firearms, multiple rounds of ammunition and a bullet proof vest in a hole under the residence.

Scranage was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a 2000 Montana conviction for felony assault and a 2005 Montana felony conviction for criminal possession of dangerous drugs.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the McKenzie County Sheriff's Office, and the Northwest Narcotics Task Force.
