Legion Honors Military Chaplains

Posted: Updated:
Every year around February 3, four military chaplains are honored from World War II.

George Fox, Alexander Goode, John Washington and Clark Poling were on a ship off the coast of Greenland in 1943 when it was hit by a torpedo.

The chaplains, all of different faiths, gave up their own life jackets so others could be saved. The North Dakota American Legion held a ceremony for the men at the great hall of the Capitol.

A candle was lit for each of the men as their bio's were read.  A wreath was presented, songs and taps were also played in their honor.

Members from all branches of the military attended the ceremony.
