Conference Teaches Workplace Health and Safety

Posted: Updated:
Safety in the workplace is crucial, especially here in North Dakota, where a lot of jobs have definite physical requirements.

"You talk to a lot of businesses out there, that if you put the effort into safety with your people and you show that it's a value to them, to go home to their wife, husband or child, it brings a huge, I don't want to say relief, but a huge gratification to those employees," says NDSC Executive Director, Chuck Clairmont.

From CEO's to blue collar workers, every attendee at the conference was there to learn something new, and bring that new information back to their workplace.

"Thirty years experience in the fire service taught me one thing, and that is that 99 percent of the calls we responded to were preventable," says college instructor, John Lindstrom. "The accidents and injuries we received were all incidents that could have been prevented if people had safety training."

And we all know workplaces need leaders, but those who attended the conference say the training is great not only for company big-hitters, but also for every-day employees.

"Being a leader and how to do that is a huge, a huge thing that not a whole lot of people know how to do. Everybody knows how to be a leader, but how to actually implement it in your facility is a big thing you learn here," says Dakota Gasification Co. employee, K.C. Unruh.

A safety conference may not be at the top of everyone's list, but the information and skills that people learn at events like these, help workers go home to their loved ones after every shift.
