Community Members Keep Bowdon Running

Posted: Updated:

When someone new moves into town, it sometimes go unnoticed. But when your town's population is only 130 people, it's a big deal.

It's a testament to the sustainability of small towns. Residents of Bowdon in Wells County are rallying together to keep their home on the map.

It's a small community where the deer may outnumber the people.

"Yeah. Big deer population. They'll probably be thirty or forty wandering through town at night," says Bowdon resident Larry Tebelius.

One man came for the wildlife. But it's his 130 neighbors that make Bowdon feel like home.

"We have our kookies. But they're just kooky enough to make it interesting and tolerable and fun. And the people are very loving, and warm, and generous and easy to get to know. It's a great place. And that's why I live here," says resident Jim Pryor.

In Bowdon, it's the residents who are keeping the small town alive. Pastor Dale Peaslee not only leads his congregation in prayer. He also drives the volunteer ambulance.

"I think when you're a smaller community, people do see the need for each other and know each other more. When a neighbor is hurting, it kind of gets to be like family. It's a bigger family, but it is family," says Peaslee.

And now, a new co-op is bringing more traffic into town. Bowdon Meat Processing opened in January. And it's already greeting customers from across the state.

"It's bringing people into Bowdon for jobs for one thing. For the other thing, it's bringing business to the other local businesses here in town," says Lindsay Widicker, Bowdon Meat Processing. "We have a very close relationship with the grocery store. A lot of the people who bring their animals stop at the cafe and have lunch or coffee. So, it's really bringing a lot of awareness to Bowdon and we're really excited about it.

Three of the employees moved to Bowdon to take a job at the plant. And they're already regulars at the café.

Widicker says so far most of the co-ops customers have been from out of town. She's seen people travel from both Bismarck and Minot.
