Tech Talk: Norac

The word "ultrasound" is most often associated with the medical field. But it's not the only industry that's using the technology.

Doctors aren't the only people using ultrasound technology. Farmers are also using it to improve productivity in the field.

Farmers have been ultrasound technology for years. It's a lot like sonar and it's helping farmers to achieve a more productive yield.

"Ultrasonic sensors will take a height reading from the boom to the ground," says Ross Kotewa, Norac. Farmers have been ultrasound technology for years. It's a lot like sonar and it's helping farmers to achieve a more productive yield."

Autoboom height control technology detects the height of the sprayer boom and lifts or lowers it based on the height of the soil or crop. Which helps prevent crop damage when spraying insecticides or fertilizers. Norac offers it as a factory option on six different brands of sprayers.
It can also be purchased as an after market product. But up until recently, the technology had some limitations.

Norac only offered soil and crop mode. Hybrid mode was released last October. And it's the most advanced system on the market.

"It's a third option that you can run our system in. And it combines soil and crop mode. So, if you're spraying a crop canopy, and you come across a drown-out or a wash-out, this will actually be taking a running crop height average and be able to eliminate any kind of unnecessary boom movement that would occur in that kind of situation," says Kotewa.

The company offers two systems. They sell for around $8,000.

The product received the 2014 Outstanding Innovations Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.
