Senate Confirms Baucus as Ambassador to China

Posted: Updated:

Montana senator Max Baucus will become U.S. Ambassador to China. His colleagues approved his appointment unanimously this afternoon.

Baucus, who is 72, has served 36 years in the Senate and announced last year he would not seek re-election.  He will succeed Gary Locke.

Fellow Montana senator Jon Tester called Baucus a "champion for Montana" prior to the confirmation vote.

"In Montana a promise to help is a promise to keep. That's the Montana way, that's the Max Baucus way. Max, it's been an honor to serve with you. It's an honor to call you my friend and the Senate will be a lesser body without you," says Sen. Jon Tester.

As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Baucus has drafted trade legislation and has traveled to China on trade missions.

Montana Governor Steve Bullock is expected to appoint a replacement for Baucus until his term expires in January 2015. There's been talk that he'll appoint Lieutenant Governor John Walsh.
